Oh yeah, I’d have set it on fire if she fell for him, but I thought trying to make him sympathetic was offensive too. I mean, he picked his wives from a line up. How stupid was he if he thought they wanted it? But I see what you mean.

Didn’t he think that they’d all volunteered/come willingly? I mean, he was really dumb and naive, and it doesn’t say volumes about his character, but he never intentionally set out to hurt anyone. And that doesn’t excuse shit, because he still basically raped two girls (and how many past wives?), but IIRC what made me sympathize with him was how he reacted when he found out that the girls were abducted and forced into marriage. I read the book over a year ago so I don’t remember all the details so well, but it seemed like he might make an effort to change things after learning the truth.
